Objectives:
(1) Empower local communities to sustainably manage healthy baobab populations; (2) Empower local communities to efficiently use baobab fruits to improve their wellbeing; (3) Facilitate implementation of a sustainable and equitable trade of baobab derived products.

At three pilot sites we will establish a sustainable trade of Grandidier’s baobab (Adansonia grandidieri) fruits in order to improve regeneration in the wild and reduce poverty and malnutrition in local communities. To do this, we will reinforce baobab populations and integrate sustainable harvesting agreements into existing co-management plans. In parallel, we will empower communities to collect, process and trade baobab products to existing markets. As a co-benefit, we will improve access to nutritious baobab powders through the hungry months.

Specific Area (Village, Town, District, Province):
Madagascar
HQ of the Initiative:
Antananarivo, Madagascar
Timeframe:
2018 to 2022
Is the timeframe likely to be extended?:
Yes
Elaborate on likelihood to extend:
The project implementation has been hampered by a ban declared by the Malagasy Government on natural resources exploitation in January 2019 and delayed by the Covid-19 crisis. This is why the timeframe needed to be extended from its initial completion date (March 2021). In addition, there are now requests to replicate the initiatives at other villages in western Madagascar.
